Thrift Shop Finds And Free Records! Part 2

Just a week or so, ago, I had opportunity to visit our local Habitat For Humanity store, something I hadn’t done for awhile, and was fortunate to come across some .50 45 rpm records, along with a few 78′s, too.  Mostly Country, but some good oldies mixed in, as well, I dug up some real gold on this find.

The 45′s…

Red Sovine 45Red Sovine – “I Know You’re Married But I Love You Still” – Starday

Hugh X. Lewis – “Everything I Love” – Columbia

Vanity Fare – Hitchin’ A Ride” – Page One

Dean Martin – “Return To Me” – Capitol – A great find, as this is in near mint condition, meaning I can replace the very worn out copy I  have.

Roger Miller – “King Of The Road” – Smash

Randy Barlow – “Lonely Eyes” – Gazelle

Marty Robbins "Ain't I The Lucky One"Marty Robbins – “Ain’t I The Lucky One” – A radio station or promo copy

Bobby Edwards – “You’re The Reason” – Crest

And, the 78′s…

George Morgan – “Stranger In The Night” – Columbia

Little Jimmy Dickens – “Walk Chicken Walk” – Columbia

Francis Craig "Near You"Francis Craig – “Near You” – Bullet – This still holds the mark for longest run at #1 on the pop charts; 17 weeks in 1947.

The Chordettes – “Mister Sandman” – Cadence

Roy Acuff – “Waiting For My Call To Glory” – Columbia

Thrift Shop Finds and Free Records!! Part 1

Well it’s been awhile since I’ve really posted anything, here, outside of some show playlists, but that should be changing, here, soon. I haven’t done a whole lot of thrift shopping, lately, but recently have had some interesting finds in the few attempts I have made. Back over the Summer, while spending a Sunday afternoon at some of the Asheville-area antique malls, I did make a couple of nice finds. At one location, I ran across three LP’s of note:

LP's from Homer and Jethro, and Hank SnowHomer and Jethro Strike Back – RCA Camden;  The Humorous Side Of Country Music – Homer and Jethro – RCA Camden; and one of Hank Snow’s first album releases, Country and Western Jamboree on RCA Victor.

But the find of that day had to be a 45 rpm that I ran across at another store; “Western Union” by the Five Americans on Abnak Records.  This record was a top 5 Pop hit in the Spring of 1967. I had a well-worn copy (which has now found a home in my 9 year old daughter’s growing 45 collection), but this copy is in excellent condition. And the best part? It was free! It turns out that the record was in the lost and found section and the staff had no idea what booth it came from, so they simply gave it to me.

My next acquisition came courtesy of a co-worker at my “day” job. Anne is her name and she had about 15 45′s that she wanted to get rid of, and rather than simply give them to a thrift shop or throw them out, she wanted to give them to someone whom she knew would appreciate them, and I do! Thanks, Anne!

There’s a nice mix of oldies, country, and a couple of regional sounds in the mix.  I wound up with the following…

“Sundown” – Gordon Lightfoot – Reprise

“Sunshine On My Shoulders” – John Denver – RCA Victor

"Sweet Georgia Brown" by Brother Bones“Sweet Georgia Brown” – Brother Bones – Harlem Globetrotters – This record was initially issued on a 78 rpm on the Tempo label.  My dad had a copy of this when I was a kid, but it got broke.

“Kind Of A Drag” – The Buckinghams – U. S. A.

“Acid Raga” – Sunn Cycle – Spectrum – This is a very scarce record, recorded here in Asheville, in 1969.  A Psychedelic "Kind Of A Drag" The Buckinghamsinstrumental, I think it’s a great sounding record, especially for a local release.

“The Ballad Of The Green Beres” – Sgt. Barry Sadler – RCA Victor

“Day For Decision” – Johnny Sea – Warner Brothers – This was an answer song to Barry McGuire’s “Eve Of Destruction”.

“Hung Up In Your Eyes” – Brian Hyland – Philips

"Acid Raga" by Sunn Cycle“Baby I Need Your Lovin’ – Johnny Rivers – Imperial

“What The World Needs Now Is Love/Abraham, Martin, & John” – Tom Clay – Mowest

“Judy In Disguise” – John Fred & His Playboy Band – Paula – Another that replaced a slightly more worn copy that my daughter now has.

“Tee Shirts and Mudflaps, Parts 1 & 2″ – Johnny Bell & The Jaguars – Really Sincere – Another local release, I think from ’68.

“The Night Chicago Died” – Paper Lace – Mercury

“Nashville Cats” – The Lovin’ Spoonful – Kama Sutra

And that’s not all. I recently got a nice, inexpensive haul of 45′s AND 78′s, at the local Habitat For Humanity store.  We’ll look at that collection in part 2 of this article, coming up.

Roundhouse in Asheville to be demolished

Haven’t posted anything in our railroad category in a lonnnggg time.  Norfolk Southern just announced they are preparing to demolish the roundhouse, here in Asheville, NC.  Kind of sad, not too many of them left.  The full story from Asheville’s newspaper, the Citizen-Times.

Ultimate Twang Show For October 9, 2014

1978 single for Bobby Borchers, "I Promised Her A Rainbow"This week on The World Famous Ultimate Twang, you’ll hear three hours’ worth of lost or almost lost country classics and gems. Great sounds that you haven’t likely heard in quite a while from the likes of Glen Campbell, Charley Pride, Gene Watson, Rosanne Cash, Ricky Van Shelton, Marie Osmond, and many more. You’ll hear insirational faves from Waylon, Red Foley, and The Brown’s Ferry Four, plus classic LP tracks from Merle Haggard, Jim Reeves, and Don Williams. In addition, having spent a little time thrift shopping, I’ve got a couple of 45′s that’ll get their first-ever play on the show from Red Sovine and Hugh X. Lewis. That thrift shopping, by the way, yielded quite a few 45′s and 78′s; I’ll have more to play on future shows. It kicks off at 4p ET, so make sure you join me, at the Asheville Free Media web site for 3 hours of commercial-free classic country music!

Blowing The Dust Off This Blog, Today's Show, and R. I. P. George Hamilton IV

Greetings from Asheville, where it’s been a while since I’ve added anything to our beloved blog.  The months have been busy; there was school, work, and so much more, but now I am hoping to devote some time to this blog, again, perhaps making some changes and give it a general freshening up.  Stay tuned.

Today is show day for The World Famous Ultimate Twang Radio Show.  You can hear the show, anywhere in the world, by simply going the Asheville Free Media page and clicking the listen button.  It’s 3 hours of classic country music and nostalgia, hosted by me, your humble Country Musicologist.  Simply click the following link to go to our AFM page.  And if you live in the Asheville area, soon you’ll be able to hear Ultimate Twang, as well as all of AFM’s programming at 103.3 FM. Country music great George Hamilton IV passed away, Wednesday, several days after suffering a heart attack.  The North Carolina native and longtime Grand Ole Opry member was 77 years old.  In addition to his success here in the U. Ultimate Twang Radio Show - Memorial Day Weekend Edition

It’s Memorial Day weekend, and we’re in the mood to have some fun!  Today’s Ultimate Twang features our usual array of classic country music from many of your all-time favorites, plus some added goodies, this week.  We’ll honor the fallen men and women of America with music from Trace Adkins, Elton Britt, and Merle Haggard, and of course, with Memorial Day, comes the revving of engines, the thrill of 200+ miles per hour speed, and the excitement and danger of a group of brightly colored cars hurdling around a big oval.  This weekend is the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600, and we’ll dig out a bit of trivia and play some sounds from Marty Robbins, Kyle Petty, and Bobby Mack to get you in the mood.  4p ET is the start time, today, and if you can’t join me for the live edition, remember, the archived version will be available on the Ultimate Twang page, on the Asheville Free Media website!  Make sure you let everyone know to join us today! Asheville FM | Community Radio.

To listen, simply click on Asheville FM, above, then go to the right side of their page and click that gray play button you will see.  Or for even higher fidelity, click Hi-Fi on the red Listen Live button just above.
